Irish Play “King” on the Stage of Bitef Theatre on March 14th and 15th

As part of the 12th Belgrade Irish Festival, taking place from March 8 to 18, this year the audience will have the opportunity to exclusively see the play “King” on the stage of the Bitef Theatre, performed by the Dublin theatre company “Fishamble”.

“King” is an exciting monodrama, in the form of dance and movement theatre, which won the audience at the influential European theatre festival in Edinburgh (Edinburgh Fringe) 2023, and was also nominated for the Pick of the Fringe by Mental Health Foundation, for plays addressing the theme of contemporaray mental health.

The Fishamble and Pat Kinevan, tha actor, received the prestigious Olivier Award for Acting Excellence in 2016. This award, named after actor Sir Laurence Olivier for the past 40 years, is the equivalent of the Tony Awards on the global stage. The play was directed by Jim Culliton.

The play will be performed in Belgrade for two nights, on March 14th and 15th, at the Bitef Theatre.

“King” tells the story of a recluse named Luther, named after Martin Luther King. He doesn’t leave his home during the day, but at night he “transforms” into a completely different king – Elvis Presley. The story, masterfully portrayed by Pat Kinevane, shows us a man who, like any of us, tries to adapt to the world while still living in accordance with himself, his desires, and dreams.

The Guardian has called Pat Kinevane’s acting in this play – brilliant, because of the beauty of movement, fantastic light play on the stage, and deep emotional expression successfully conveyed to the audience.

After Belgrade, “King” will have premiere performances at the off-Broadway stage in New York, as well as in Los Angeles.
